It is also important that all of these arias do reflect a certain range (i.e. more limited) in scope. I see - quite often - at live auditions a singer have their "5" arias listed and then below have "additional repertoire" that goes from one to four or five arias. These are usually quite helpful and supplemental. But, it is true, there are so many in the business who are more comfortable with just THE FIVE arias. Sad and so limiting.Patrick Hansenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11860289047083002823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178223962435056470.post-30338414848722297552016-09-03T19:25:04.470-07:002016-09-03T19:25:04.470-07:00I tried the 10-15 aria thing last year after readi...I tried the 10-15 aria thing last year after reading this post because I agree with the philosophy. Unfortunately, every audition I had (17 total) had the same response - skepticism from the get-go. This was simply because it was out of the ordinary compared to the standard 5 aria formula, and I suppose they felt from their perspective it makes one look amateurish rather than more professional, and to be clear this was before I even began to sing. They looked at the list and seemed to think, "what's with all the arias, he must not know what he is doing." So, my experience was, even though this is great idea and should be the norm, it is not the norm and because it is not the norm as those people who make the decisions see it you run the risk of coming off, as they see it, as a weirdo. I advise against it in an audition setting. You can learn 10 - 15 arias sure, but let them ask is what I would say.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178223962435056470.post-57834839908448353002016-09-03T16:06:30.259-07:002016-09-03T16:06:30.259-07:00Very realistic! As far as attire is concerned, wear something YOU feel comfortable in, and get some honest advice as to how you *really* look. Sorry to be so blunt, ladies, but if you have a giant ass, don't wear a tight-fitting dress. And guys, the scruffy look might work OK for Jonas Kaufman, but until you're in his pay grade, shave and get a haircut.

As to repertoire, I'm a big fan of the rare versus the common. Do you really want to be the third mezzo of the day to sing "Parto, parto"? Maybe instead be that only mezzo they hear all year who auditioned with the page's aria from Meyerbeer's "Les Huguenots," or the tenor who eschewed "Una furtiva lagrima" in favor of Alamiro's exit aria from Donizetti's "Belisario."Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15108465772155357238noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5178223962435056470.post-46349552292484637892015-09-15T15:02:07.543-07:002015-09-15T15:02:07.543-07:00So true! While some fachs are definitely tricky (especially with company preferences), strengths certainly can be covered, and a good singer-actor should have some flexibility in terms of acting strengths. Also, Spanish isn't overtly mentioned, which I'd consider adding pending my location. Examining DMA level repertoire lists, the U of Michigan requirements list 23 seperate categories for precandidates to be able to discuss and perform, with mulitple slots for some categories.
